Will Wal-Mart Wind Up Taking Over?
Although theoretically the Stewardship Index for Specialty Crops is independent of Wal-Mart, much of its potential power and influence in the industry comes from the expectation that Wal-Mart will incorporate the Stewardship Index into its own sustainability program. Andrea Thomas has a reputation as being smart as a whip, and nobody knows of course whether she will continue on the path Wal-Mart had been working. But many involved in the stewardship process have approached us at the Pundit with doubts about the Stewardship Index. The initial thought was that the Stewardship Index would facilitate sustainability, at low cost to growers and shippers, by standardizing the way measurements were done so that one grower could be compared to another. The hope was this could avoid duplicative audits and other expenses. Now, however, some feel there has been “mission drift,” and the Stewardship Index for Specialty Crops in moving toward prescriptive standards. Jim Prevor writes as the Perishable Pundit.

Environmental footprint and sustainability of horticulture a comparison with other agricultural sectors
To quantify the environmental footprint of horticultural production and to assess the social and economic impacts of that production. To compare the results with other agriculture sectors. Measuring Holistic Carbon Footprints for Lamb and Beef
This report was recently produced for farmers who are involved in the low carbon footprint food production in the Cambrian Mountains (UK) Initiative. The report’s aim is to provide farmers with: a) a comprehensive GHG footprint for each participating farm; b) a sensitivity analysis that explores how altered management practices may affect the overall carbon footprint of the farm and c) identification of key areas in the footprint of each farm that offer potential for emissions reduction at a whole-farm level and per kilogramme of product. Farmers to face new wildlife targets?
Pressure is likely to increase on farmers to reverse a “seemingly inexorable” decline in wildlife, suggests a report. More effort is needed to reverse the decline in numbers of many species and the continuing loss of valuable wildlife habitats, warns the study. The document, Making Space for Nature, was published by DEFRA. The report calls for a step-change in the government’s approach to wildlife conservation. Told to Eat Its Vegetables, America Orders Fries
Despite two decades of public health initiatives, stricter government dietary guidelines, record growth of farmers’ markets and the ease of products like salad in a bag, Americans still aren’t eating enough vegetables. This month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a comprehensive nationwide behavioral study of fruit and vegetable consumption. Only 26 percent of the nation’s adults eat vegetables three or more times a day, it concluded. (And no, that does not include French fries.) New York Times story.
