2011 Graduate Student Food Colloquium, Mobilizing Food Solutions, Toronto, May 1

The aim of the Graduate Student Food Colloquium is to provide the opportunity to share and learn about current grad student research in food-related issues; to network; and to present current work in a highly collegial environment. Though the past colloquiums have involved students mainly from York University, Ryerson University, and University of Toronto, passionate, food-focused graduate students from other universities are welcome. From Policy to Research and Back Again, Ottawa, May 5

The Rural Ontario Institute is pleased to be among the organizations working together to plan and organize this upcoming event. Please consider attending. The workshop is hosted by the Canadian Rural Revitalization Foundation and occurring in conjunction with the federal Rural Development Network meeting. In total, 25 research papers will be presented in eight (8) concurrent sessions and up to 13 posters will be displayed. Your participation this year will not only provide you a learning and networking opportunity but also contribute to further collaboration among the partnering organizations as we look to continue to improve the accessibility, relevance and impact of research on rural Canadian issues. Edible Forest/Orchard Polyculture Workshop, Chatsworth, May 7

Learn how to design and plant small or large Orchard Polycultures in this one-day workshop, taught in the Permaculture tradition and style. Instructor Brad Peterson assisted by Jeff Kitchen will discuss site design and soil preparation techniques, and participants will learn best plant spacing, pollination and pest management practices through seminars & hands-on experience. We’re talking farmland preservation at the next TYFPC Community Meeting, Toronto, May 9

Join the TYFPC Community on Monday May 9th (date changed from May 2nd due to elections) from 600-800 at Metro Hall, room 308 for a lively discussion on farmland preservation.  We’ll be hearing from Youth experts about agricultural zoning policies, the Markham Food Belt and creating careers in sustainable agriculture. Making Local Food Work Conference, Sheffield, UK, May 12

In 1996, Joel Salatin wrote “Pastured Poultry Profits” and opened up the discussion on raising larger numbers of birds outside in a manner that would give the birds protection from the elements and predation while having the benefits of sun, bugs and grass. This workshop will look at all aspects of raising poultry on pasture in a Joel Salatin manner in Ontario. Topics covered will include breed selection, brooding, feeding, pasture housing, shipping, and slaughtering to quota and organic certification issues. Details.

Access to land is one of the most critical challenges facing new and beginning farmers today.  At the same time, there are organizations, institutions, and private/corporate farmland owners who are working to achieve landscape conservation that is productive, appropriate, and that makes the most of our finite supply of productive farmland. Farming in the Par  is a day to explore how farmers and farmland owners can turn their challenges into opportunities by working together. We will learn from two leaders how a successful initiative between the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and the Countryside Conservancy in Ohio has brought a vibrant diversified farming culture back to the park. Local Food, Imported Workers, Kitchener, May 24

Over 30,000 temporary foreign workers from countries such as Mexico, Jamaica, Guatemala and Thailand come to work annually in Canadian agriculture, the majority in Ontario. Coming since 1966, they are a vital part of the industry, yet they remain largely invisible to the Canadian public who consume the food they produce. In this lecture Janet McLaughlin discusses the lives and circumstances of migrant farm workers in Canada, as well as the long-term impacts of migration for both migrant workers and Canadian communities. 6:30-8:30pm, KPL Forest Heights Branch, 251 Fischer-Hallman Road.

Brock’s Big Bite, Beaverton, August 14

Brock’s Big Bite is a ‘long lunch’ festival.  The downtown area is closed. Long rows of tables covered with bright red and white checkered cloths stretch past the bank and the shops, replacing the cars and creating the ‘long lunch’ setting. The wonderful aromas of barbequed local beef and pork fill the air and grab your appetite.  The food tent is well-stocked with harvest-fresh vegetables and you can hear the laughter as a group of volunteers husks the bounty of corn in preparation for this celebration. And the pies… what better way to end a scrumptious meal than with a fresh slice of homemade apple or cherry pie!  We will be ready for the hungry crowds of family and friends to arrive and take their seats. It Takes A Region – 2011: A Conference To Build Our Northeast Food System, Albany, November  11-12

This year, NESAWG and partners will draw on the success of our 2009 & 2010 “It Takes a Region” conferences.  Once again, we’ll look at exciting efforts underway in our region. We’ll hear and build from the work groups  — including distribution logistics, research, messaging, access & nutrition, and policy advocacy (how do we influence the 2012 Farm Bill?). We will welcome new participants — especially emerging food system leaders and community activists.  We’ll be addressing pressing issues such as food system worker equity and growing biomass versus food.  We’ll continue to explore scale, size, geography and cross-sector partnerships.  Watch for new features and networking opportunities.
