Festival showcases homegrown food

When Toronto chef Christian Pritchard visited Yukon Territory last year, he was enraptured by the plethora of delicious and unusual ingredients and proposed the idea of a culinary festival to feature the bounty amid spectacular scenery. Fast forward through months of organizing, and the Yukon Culinary Festival, which kicks off Thursday and runs through Monday, is giving residents and visitors a chance to sample local delicacies under the midnight sun. “This is the first ever culinary festival of this magnitude in the Yukon, but more than that it’s the first ever multi-day territory-wide culinary festival in all the territories north of 60 in Canada,” Blake Rogers said in an interview from Whitehorse, where he’s executive director for the Tourism Industry Association of the Yukon. BMO Survey Says Consumers Support Local Farmers

BMO Bank of Montreal’s David Rinneard says Canadians are unwavering in their support for local farmers. Rinneard is the bank’s Director of Agriculture and Agribusiness. He’s talking about BMO Bank of Montreal’s third annual survey of the reasons Canadians buy local food. The survey says the top three reasons are that the food is fresh and tastes better, it supports the local economy and it supports local farmers. Blackburn AgriMedia story.

Chefs forage for local fare within stunning landscapes in ‘The Chef’s Domain’

Canada’s fields, forests and frigid waters form a stunning visual backdrop as talented chefs seek the ingredients for their culinary creations in the TV series “The Chef’s Domain.” The 10-part show features extraordinary field-to-table feasts cooked up by acclaimed chefs from coast to coast. The second season begins airing Tuesday with back-to-back episodes at 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. ET on Discovery World as part of the channel’s month-long free preview. Locavore movement continues to gain strength

“Think global, buy local.” It seems more of us are taking that slogan to heart, at least according to the third annual BMO Food Survey released this morning. Steve Saccomano with BMO says are there are a few reasons for that.  “Canadians prefer their local foods because it tastes better and it’s fresher,” he explains.  “They love to support their local economy and their local farmers and they understand that it creates the local jobs.” The love for local extends to right here in Beautiful British Columbia. Group wants to see local food strategy for Saskatoon

A group of local organizations teamed up to look at Saskatoon’s food situation on Saturday. An information and feedback session was held at Saturday’s Farmers Market, where the groups involved said they hope to ultimately improve the food system in the city by strengthening the presence of local food. Canada (BC): Farmers’ Markets are the backbone of the local food movement

Farmers’ markets contribute significantly to the local economy, injecting nearly $170 million annually, according to a recent Social and Economic Benefits study by the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets (BCAFM) and Dr. David Connell of the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC). Farmers’ markets are now in full swing throughout British Columbia.  “Although people know that farmers’ markets are a great place to buy fresh, local food,” said Jon Bell, president of the BCAFM, “the results of this study demonstrate the incredible growth of markets since 2006 when we supported a similar study.” Farmers’ markets in BC have continued to grow, producing 147 % more sales in 2012 than 2006. National Recognition for Ellen Desjardins

Ellen’s leadership and dedication to public service on community food security and healthy and sustainable food systems has been exceptional. She worked for many years promoting community food security and championing a healthy local food system through her work at the Region of Waterloo Public Health. Ellen has done pioneering work linking food with community health, environmental considerations, and local economic development. She was also a founding member of Food Secure Canada in 2005. Industry voices dominate at Canadian Food Summit

Conference participants included an interesting array of representatives from government, civil society and industry — with industry interests most prominently featured in all of the presentations, panels, and plenaries. To increase the representation in the room, the J.W. McConnell Foundation funded 10 non-profit organizations to attend — people who made full use of their entrance badges to ask the difficult questions in each and every plenary session, and were among the few to stay until the bitter end (by which point most of the industry players had long since gone home). Researcher Questions Whether Local Food = Good Policy

Local food is a good marketing tool – but not necessarily good public policy. That’s according to George Morris Centre researcher Al Mussell. He says government policies appear to be designed to correct the failure of markets to adequately supply local food. But Mussell says those market failures and root causes have not been clearly identified. Blackburn AgriMedia story.
